Sarawak Cup to kick off on Nov 4

KUCHING: The Sarawak Cup 2017 football championship which was previously postponed will be held from November 4 to 12. Sarawak Cup organising chairman, Cassidy Ak Morris said they had confirmed the new date for the tournament.

“We have finalised the date for the championship and the matter has been informed to all the divisional representatives,” Cassidy said on Wednesday. According to Cassidy, 12 teams will take part in the tournament to vie for this season’s title.

The teams consist of Mukah (host), Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang Division. Samarahan were the defending champions. Three fields will be used throughout the tournament, namely Mukah Mini Stadium, Padang Mes ra MDDM and Padang UiTM Mukah Campus in Mukah.

“The group stage will start on November 5 with the quarterfinals beginning on November 8. “The semi-finals are expected to be played November 9,” Cassidy added. The third place playoff will take held on November 10 while the final will be on November 11 at Mukah Mini Stadium.

The last time Mukah hosted the tournament was in 1989 where Mukah emerged champions after defeating Miri 1-0.

The second t ime Mukah emerged as champions was in 1990 (in Kapit). After that, Mukah’s best performance was only reaching the semi-finals of 2008 (lost to Sibu 2-0) at the State Stadium. That year (2008) Samarahan emerged as the champions.
