KUCHING:  Sarawak is currently the world’s largest sago exporter with an annual export of about 25,000 to 40,000 tonnes of sago products to Peninsular Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and other countries.

Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed this in his speech read by Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the opening of the 13th International Sago Symposium at Riverside Majestic Hotel here yesterday.

With Sarawak’s economic development, sago was no longer a staple food among the people of the state except among nomads and semi nomads like Penan who eat it as a traditional light snack, added Johari.

However, in the Melanau areas, sago as a food source had become a source of  income.
