KUCHING: An international mobile phone scam for those using Telecom fixed lines has hit Sarawak. Using Africa as its base, the International SCAM Operation is based in Maldives. \

The modus operandi of the syndicate is to make random calls to Telecom fixed line users.

If you answer the call, the syndicate will have your personal details and will start making “reserve charge” calls without your permission.

An executive from a Kuching newspaper received 500 “missed calls” with international numbers from April 28 till May 2 and had been billed a total of RM400 over the last five days despite not answering the calls.

Some of the numbers received were apparently from Africa and Indonesia including unknown destinations with numbers such as +88216901316, +88233010750, +21269228006 and +25772335150.

After making a police report at Tabuan Jaya Police Station, the executive discovered that a few others including a police corporal has also been scammed in this manner.
