KUCHING:  So far, 43 athletes from Sarawak  are confirmed taking part in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur later this month.

This was revealed by Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth, and Sports Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a press conference held at his office in Bangunan Baitulmakmur here on Tuesday.

“These athletes from Sarawak are part of the 876 athletes who will represent Malaysia in 404 events from 38 sports,” he said.

“We hope more names will be released so that the media can play up our athletes and make the people feel proud of them.

“These athletes can bring glory not only to Malaysia but also Sarawak,” he said, adding that he was confident that Sarawak athletes would be able to bring back gold medals from sports such as wushu, swimming and shooting.

When asked if the state government would give incentives to Sarawak athletes who brought home medals, Karim replied: “We will consider them either in the form of cash or medals.”
