KUCHING: The traffic lights at Simpang Jalan Demak 1, which are now operational, are expected to ease the traffic flow from Kuching to Demak or Bako

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Santubong parliamentary seat, Dato Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar , said the installation of traffic lights was important as the road junction was among the crowded traffic routes.

“A study shows that 2,473 vehicles pass  this road within one hour,” he said when met by reporters after switching on the traffic lights at Simpang Jalan Demak 1 here yesterday. According to  Junaidi, due to the crowded traffic conditions, the risk of accidents is high.

“We received many complaints and after being told by the area’s representative, the traffic lights were built using the allocation from the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).

“The cost of this traffic project is RM530,000 from the RTP. If we have to wait for the allocation from the local authority, it will take time because the funds are limited,” he explained.

Junaidi added that the traffic lights were equipped with monitoring systems and cameras.

The construction of the traffic lights  at Simpang Jalan Demak 1 started on  December 6, 2017 and was completed on March 30, 2018.

The allocation came from the RTP funds under the Demak Laut State Assemblyman, Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni.
