KUCHING: SJN FC and Katahil FC emerged as champions of the MBKS Mayor’s Football Trophy 2018 after beating their opponents in the finals held at Jubilee Ground in Padungan here on Sunday evening. SJN emerged champions in the veteran category (for players 45 years and above) after beating the favourite team, Stampin-Hippo, 2-0.

Katahil FC was champion in the open category after beating IRIZ FC, 3-1. The match that stole the show was the final match in the veteran category. Stampin-Hippo led by two former national players, Ramos Sari and Bobby Pian launched several attacks in the early half of the match but failed to strike the ball on target. On the other hand, SJN made a surprising attack in the eighth minute to break the dreadlock by a simple push from Iskandar Bujang after a cross.

SJN continued to launch a few more attacks and missed two golden opportunities through Abdul Latif , affectionately known as ‘Tomang’.

Stampin tried to make a comeback in the second half but eventually failed to do so. Instead SJN completed the strike in the penalty box through Abdul Latif who made the final score of 2-0.

Stampin captained by Raymond Goh Peng Peng in the next attempt of attack failed to find a goal for his team which led the score line to stay 2-0 until the match ended. The match was played for 30 minutes which was 15 minutes per half. As champions of both categories, SJN FC and Katahil FC each brought home a cash prize worth of RM2,000.

SJN FC was also strengthened by former Ngap Sayot striker, Razak Ismail and former DBKU star, Juajiman Wagino. A total of 12 teams participated in the veteran category while 12 teams participated in the open category of the football tournament.

Also in action for the tournament was another former national striker, Affendi Julaihi with his brother, Aedi Julaihi (former State player). They represented the Losso Team which lost in the semi-finals.
