Slight drop in crime cases noted

KUCHING: The cr ime index for Kuching district in the past 333 days of this year recorded a decrease compared to the corresponding period last year.

According to Kuching District police chief, ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, the crime index for Kuching district from 1 January until November 29 recorded a total of 1,425 cases compared to 1,454 cases in the same period last year.

“A drop of 29 cases was recorded or a drop of 1.99 per cent,” he said in his speech during the monthly assembly of IPD Kuching at IPD Kuching Hqs here, yesterday. H e added that street crime cases recorded a significant decrease compared to other crime cases.

“This year, there are 82 cases recorded for street crime cases compared to 128 cases recorded for the same period last year.

This showed a drop of 46 cases or minus 35.94 per cent,” he pointed out. Abang Ahmad said the decrease in number in crime cases was due to everyone’s efforts, especially the crime investigation department, police stations, police MPV and UR personnel.

“They also include the corporation and efforts given by non governmental associations (NGOs) and local authorities which held many programmes to ensure Kuching city is safe and peaceful to live in,” he said. He also said that IPD Kuching has successfully busted seven gangs that are involved in crime activities such as robbing 24-hour convenience store and stealing vehicles.

“The seven gangs were Geng Baja, Geng Yen, Geng Taza, Geng Viva, Geng Faqrull, Geng Dido and Geng Bacok,” he said. He said the arrest of members of the gangs has given a big impact to the decrease in the number of crime cases in Kuching.

“However, we believe that there are other gangs and we will continue to fight against crimes in Kuching and we hope for full cooperation from the public by providing us with correct information and details,” he added.

During the event, 19 people comprising police officers, police pensioners and civilian officers received appreciation certificates form ACP Abang Ahmad for their services to the police force.
