SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) had rounded up 160 dogs from Oct 1-24 this year. SMC Chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said officers on duty catching stray dogs were often confronted with various haphazards concerning roaming dogs.

“All stray dogs are being impounded due to the owners’ failure to keep their dogs contained or controlled.

“Undeniably, there are risks from stray dog populations such as spreading diseases, aggressive behaviour or damage to livestock,” he said during the full council meeting held at SMC office here yesterday. Tiong said there was a necessity to expand the space and increase the cost of constructing bigger cages to store all the impounded dogs at the council depot.

He urged irresponsible dog owners to look into the negative impact on the public due to their selfishness in handling their pets. On separate matter, he said the council noticed some groups or event organisers had began promoting their events prior obtaining the approval from SMC.

“We would like to emphasise that all applications to organise events by utilising the facilities or places under the council’s jurisdiction shall obtain approval prior to the implementation of publicity and promotion of the event.

“We would screen through the details of proposals submitted by the applicants and further deliberation shall be decided in our monthly Standing Committee Meeting for General Purposes and Communi ty Services,” he explained. He said the council would cooperate with the police in taking stern action against errant organisers.
