SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will not tolerate illegal parking in the town centre as such irresponsible habit causes inconvenience to other fellow road users.

Deputy chairlady of SMC,  Rogayah Jemain said illegal parking in the town centre,  particularly at Channel Road,  Khoo Peng Loong Road,  Central Road, Raminway,  Sanyan Road,  Market Road and High Street was creating public disturbance and was hazardous in case of emergencies.

“Thus,  the council urges the general public to make full use of the multi-storey car park and refrain from illegal parking.

“At the same time, the police are working closely with SMC to strictly enforce the laws on illegal parking,”  she said, adding that waivering of compounds would not be entertained.

Rogayah told SMC Full Council meeting yesterday that the council might consider raising the compounds.

She added that improper handling of rubbish by proprietors of shophouses in the commercial areas was also contributing to an unpleasant environment in the town.

Rogayah said many bin centres had been allocated in the central business district.

“But rubbish is simply dumped either along the 5-foot ways or backlanes of the shophouses,” she pointed out. She considered indiscriminate littering to be a selfish behaviour.

SMC, added Rogayah, had resolved to increase the fine for littering to RM500 per compound with effect from July 1, 2017.
