BINTULU: Some disabled and individuals with special needs were among the mammoth crowds of 10,000 people attending the State Level National Day celebration here on Thursday.

In his address, Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg used his own brand of Sarawak greetings by using ‘Salam Ibu Pertiwiku’ and then followed by ‘Salam Negaraku 1Malaysia’.

“We support a strong central government and we want the State-Federal relationship to be close and cordial. We will always discuss with the federal government in a friendly and family-like atmosphere to solve whatever issues we have and come up with amicable solutions,” he said at the event.

On the state economy he reiterated the importance of digital economy.

“We have to leapfrog our economy from one that is semi-mechanised to a digital economy otherwise we will be forever behind the rest of the world which are fully capitalising on digital technology right now,” he said.

And he added, with this background we have to be innovative enough to transform the state economy from conventional to a digital one.

“The state cannot be incremental in the approach but we have to leapfrog because we are left very far behind.

Today, developed countries are already at the stage that is called Industry 4.0.

The first Industrial Revolution or Industry 1.0 was triggered by the invention of steam engine and water power that led to mechanisation.

The second Industrial Revolution, Industry 2.0 was the era of mass production, assembly line and electricity.

Industry 3.0 was the era of computer and automation. And Industry 4.0 is the current era of automation and data exchange or simply the era of digital technology and data.

For that, he said the state has allocated RM1billion for the upgrading of infrastructures, Internet services, so that Internet speed will be up to 4Terabit per second or back haul speed and our every household will have 100 megabites per second.

“So our telecommunication towers will be upgraded to 5,000 telcos to the present 1,200 across the state.”

He will be tabling the Sarawak Multi Media Ordinance in November sitting of the state assembly, that will govern all aspects of the digital development in the state. Thus the ordinance will provide for the formation of the Sarawak Multi-Media Authority (SMA) which would be set up by January next year.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that the state has the human capacity to achieve the digital pursuit. The Tegas Digital Innovation Hub in Kuching is a precursor to the setting up of a Digital Village in Samajaya, Kuching by the year 2020.

With that, the state agency like Yayasan Sarawak will be providing loans and scholarships for the various new disciplines at the masters and PhD levels at reputable research universities in the country and overseas.

This is the charting of our own destiny towards a developed state by the year 2030, he said.

At the celebration, the aforesaid figure of attendance comprised the public and more than 3,000 people involved in the 80 contingents that took part in the parade both from the public and private sectors, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), uniformed and non-uniformed bodies and students who took advantage of the bright sunny morning.

Also present were the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib.

Soon after their arrival, the state anthem was played followed by a welcoming performance.

Azmi Hj.Ali from the 20th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment whereas the Police Band was led by ASP Hamka Sulaiman assisted by Drum Major Ghazali Hj.Buang with 47 other personnel.
