STA: RM900k given since 2012 to assist rural schools

SIBU: Sarawak Timber Association (STA) has been working closely with Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) since 2012, where as of today a sum of RM900,000 has been provided as the Educational / Scholarship Fund administered by STIDC for rural primary and secondary schools in Sarawak.

According to chairman of STA, Pemanca Datuk Wong Kie Yik, amongst the areas that have been covered are Mukah, Dalat, Matu, and Daro in 2013, Bintulu, Tatau, Sebauh and Balingian in 2014, Miri, Subis, Baram, Lawas, Limbang, Sibu, Kanowit and Selangau in 2016.

“As at July 2017, 454 primary schools and 84 secondary schools had received the financial assistance,” he said at the presentation ceremony of cash incentives to students who excelled in their last year’s SPM and STPM examinations here, yesterday.

On 4 May, 2017, Wong said the general manager of STIDC, Datu Sarudu Hoklai presented a cheque of RM73,000 to SK Kampung Buda, a primary school with 75 students on the riverbank of Sungai Batang, Saribas, Betong division for rebuilding the school after it collapsed due to erosion of the river bank on 7 June, last year.

Since then, he said the students of the school have no proper classrooms for learning.

On the presentation ceremony held on 21 July 2017, he said the association will continue to provide additional financial assistance in sum of RM100,000 for SK Kampung Buda’s rebuilding.

“We hope the additional financial assistance will be able to provide conducive learning and teaching environment while waiting for government assistance,” he said.
