KUCHING: A study on waste management commissioned by the Sarawak government is expected to be completed in March next year.

Environmental quality controller of the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Peter Sawal, said the study started in December last year and was part of another more comprehensive study.

“It covers waste segregation, waste composition, rubbish collection methods for collected and uncollected rubbish, and illegally disposed rubbish in 26 councils,” he told journalists after attending the presentation of the Chief Minister’s Environmental Award (CMEA) 2017/2018 at Imperial Hotel on Wednesday night.

He said the state was also getting inputs from local consultants and those from Peninsula Malaysia, Denmark, United Kingdom and Italy.

“The study was supposed to be completed this year, but more time is needed to collect data for the integrated system and to do a simulation model,” he said.

Peter (who chairs the study’s technical committee) explained that the study would also include documenting policies, regulations, institutional framework, and integrated system that would be put in place.

“This study also addresses solid waste management including waste generated by demolition in the construction industry,” he said.

When asked if the state is emulating other waste management systems, Peter said the system would be tailor-made for the State.

“Some technologies might be too advanced and may not be suitable for the State,” he said.

The Ministry of Local Government and Housing, Ministry of Urban Development and Natural Resources, and other government bodies are also part of the study.
