STIDC’s POYOD programme enters second round

KUCHING: The first Pool of Young Designers (POYOD) group comprising six University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) graduates with a Bachelor Degree (Honours) in Designing Technology were selected to participate in this programme since January 2018. Select ions were based on the Sarawak Timber Industr y De v e l o pment Corporation (STIDC) -UNIMAS Furni ture Designing Competition 2016 under the KURSI-PUSAKA Programme.

The first POYOD group initial designs and prototypes were displayed at Malaysia International Furniture Fair 2017 and the plan is to give them wider international exposures. The registration for the second POYOD group is in progress.

POYOD is a two-year programme jointly developed and implemented by the STIDC, UNIMAS, the furniture industry players and the related agencies. It aims to raise and develop young graduates to become skilled designers.

The main objective of POYOD Programme is to provide the furniture industry with homegrown designers to develop the furniture industry line with STIDC vision to transform the timber industry into a high value industry by 2030.

An induction course was organised by STIDC from January 8 to12 to familiarise and prepare the participants with POYOD programme. The course featured 11 speakers who provided useful insights into the markets, trends and furniture design in global markets, incentives and entrepreneurship. Present ly, the POYOD are undergoing a one-year attachment training programme with one of the major players in furniture manufacturing in Sarawak.

The participants also presented their inaugural design concept to STIDC and the company management team on February 27, 2018.
