KUCHING: Kolej Sunway Kuching recently welcomed new students to its Certified Accounting Technician (CAT), Diploma in Accounting (DIA) and Diploma in Business Management (DIBM) programmes with a number of orientation activities held at the college’s City Campus at Song Plaza, Jalan Song here, recently.

According to Kolej Sunway Kuching CEO Joseph Lim, more than 60 students participated in these sessions which consisted of icebreaker games, teambuilding exercises and motivational talks.

“The new students were briefed on their respective course structures and career pathways upon graduation. They also got to meet staff and management of our college,” Lim said.

Lim expressed delight with the intake numbers, which exceeded his expectations.

“The intake numbers for all three programmes are very encouraging. In particular, it is pleasing to see increased enrolments for DIBM, a course that we only launched last year,” he said.

Lim suggested that the popularity of CAT, DIA and DIBM can be attributed to the multitude of options they offer students upon graduation.

“Our CAT, DIA and DIBM graduates can use their respective qualifications to gain employment or as a stepping stone to a degree or professional qualification,” Lim said.

Lim explained that all three qualifications are approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and recognised by employers throughout the country.

“We have also established articulation pathways to enable our DIA and DIBM graduates to pursue Year 2 of undergraduate degrees at a number of good ranking local and overseas universities,” said Lim.

The universities that accept Sunway’s DIA and DIBM graduates are Nottingham University Malaysia Campus, University of Waikato, New Zealand, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, Birmingham City University, UK, University of Western Australia, Curtin University Sarawak and Australia, Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus, University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia Catholic University, Sydney, Cardiff University, Wales, Kaplan Higher Education Academy’s (KHEA’s) University Partners (University of Portsmouth UK, University of Essex, UK & Murdoch University, Australia), KDU University College, Kuala Lumpur, James Cook University, Singapore and Sunway University.

“With our articulation pathway, you could choose to study overseas in the UK, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand. Alternatively, you could stay closer to your family and friends by choosing to study at reputable local universities like UCTS, Curtin or Swinburne,” Lim said.

CAT is a nine-paper, technician level qualification designed by ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK) to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to accountancy.

The course can be completed within 12 to 18 months of full-time study and is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) as equivalent to a diploma.

CAT is generally regarded as a stepping stone to the ACCA professional accountancy qualification. Upon completing CAT, students receive exemption from the three (3) papers (Knowledge Module) at the Fundamentals Level of ACCA.

The Diploma in Accounting (DIA) is a two and a half year qualification awarded by Kolej Sunway Kuching. Consisting of 30 subjects, this course is designed to provide an alternative pathway for accounting students who want to keep their options open. Unlike CAT, which focuses almost exclusively on accounting, the DIA programme provides a strong foundation in all aspects of business.

In addition to pure accounting papers, students will also study general business papers like marketing, management, economics, law, business mathematics and entrepreneurship. Consequently, DIA students have the foundation to pursue non-accounting related further studies upon graduation.

The DIA programme also provides students with a pathway to the prestigious ACCA qualification. As the DIA syllabus is mapped to correspond with ACCA, DIA graduates will be entitled to receive exemptions of up to three papers from ACCA upon meeting the professional body’s terms and conditions.

Kolej Sunway Kuching’s Diploma in Business Management, meanwhile, is designed to enable students to acquire knowledge of the foundations of business and management. Like the DIA, the DIBM comprises 30 subjects and can be completed with two and a half years of full-time study.

The DIMB offers an in-depth business education, geared to professional practice, specialist careers, self-employment and to the demands of general management.

The course is structured to allow increased choice as it progresses and provides two specialist subject routes as well as generalist route from which students may choose, to meet their individual needs and career aspirations.

The next CAT and Diploma programmes intakes at Kolej Sunway Kuching will commence in May, 2017. For more information about the CAT, DIA and DIBM programmes, contact Kolej Sunway Kuching at 082-451221.
