KUCHING: Head of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), Central Women’s Section, Datin Jennifer Chee William regrets that the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Bill 2016 was passed in the last parliamentary sitting without Section 88A which was intended to prevent unilateral conversion of minor children by anyone of the parents.

Chee said, “The Women’s Section has been looking forward to possibilities when the Section 88A was proposed. Now that it has been removed, the problems of unilateral conversion affecting future of the children will still exist.”

Dhe added, “We strongly urge the government to reconsider and look into this matter seriously and to include Section 88A in the Law Reform Act.

“In our opinion, we do not see it as contradicting the Federal Constitution.

“As we live in a multi-racial and multi-religious country, we cannot afford to ignore the persisting problems of unilateral child conversions by parties involved.”
