KUCHING: Sarawak needs a new strategy to face against the 21th Asia Masters Athletic Championship and Wor ld Para Swimming Championship in 2019. According to Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, proper management and planning must be done as we are going to face the arrival of national athletes.

“We need a new strategy to find for new and young talents in sports and we are asking for the schools management to identify the talented and potentials students and inform the State Sports Council (MSNS),” said Johari whose text of speech was read by State Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during the launching ceremony of Sukan Sarawak 2017 (SukSar 2017) held at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya, Thursday.

He added that a new form of incentive mechanism must be created, especially for the disabled athletes (OKU). Johari noted that SukSar 2017 will highlight the names of the state athletes, especially the young and new to be the frontline for the state in higher level competitions.

“We believe that there are many hidden talents in sports that have not been explored and given the opportunity and SukSar will play its roles as their early exposures.

“For this SukSar 2017, we have one important mission – to uncover new talents and also prepare our state contingent for Sukma 2018 in Perak,” he said, adding that this effort will not only to make Sarawak as a sport powerhouse, but also attract international level sporting events to be organised in the State.
