S’wak to be ‘sold’ as a place of culture, adventure, nature

KUCHING:   Sarawak has got to be ‘sold’ as a place of culture, adventure and nature, stressed Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“In this Ministry we are not going to sell Sarawak as a shopping centre. We want to sell Sarawak as a place of culture, a place for adventures and a place for nature,” he said when officiating  at the grand opening of 11Ridgeway,  Kuching’s  latest community-driven event space, off Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here yesterday.

As such, Karim said he needs all the support from all the personalities to bring Sarawak up into what it should be.

“We have been having too much of politics and  we are going to see a little bit of difference in Sarawak for the next few years, I hope,” he added.

He congratulated 11Ridgeway’s  founder Fiona Marcus Raja and co-founder  Desmond Wong  for building up the place which used to be in dilapidated condition and changed  it into a vibrant place, nice and an authentic longhouse-ruai looked-alike.

Served as Kuching’s latest community-driven event space, 11Ridgeway is spearheaded by  its founder Fiona Marcus Raja and co-founder Desmond Wong.

The venue creates a blend between a community  space, where people can hosts their events and workshops, as well as a co-working space for individuals or groups to work on their ideas.

11Ridgeway works to engage  with communities, empower the youths, boost tourism , encourage activities as well as promote and preserve the culture and arts of Sarawak. 

Events ranging from meetings and training programmes to children’s workshops and culinary classess are welcome  at 11Ridgeway, which boasts up to 10,000 feet of available space.

Local talents can create, innovate, meet, greet, work, network and enjoy as 11Ridgeway strives to be the driving platform for tourism, arts, culture, youth and sports.

The grand opening also involved various workshops to promote the venue together with arts and culture Sarawak, including a Sape’ workshop by the Sape’ Collective, batik making workshop by Borneo Batik, and a Facebook Live feature by Orion Social Media (Sarawak).

Also among those present at the event yesterday Assistant Minister of Youth  and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan;  Dato Gerawat  Gala the  Deputy Speaker  of Sarawak State Assembly;    Dato  Peter Minos, Walikota Kota Samarahan  and Datuk  Joseph  Sallang Gandum the President of Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI).
