KUCHING: A total of 1, 092 participants will be attending the Eighth Symposium of Ulama in Malay Archipelago (Nadwah Ulama Nusantra VIII) to be held at Dewan MAJMA’ Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah and Riverside Majestic Hotel from this 23 to 25 October.

The Symposium with the theme “Sinergi Ulama Dalam Pemerkasaan Ummah” will be  jointly  organised by Sarawak Islamic Council, the Sarawak Government, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Assistant Minister for Public Utilities (Electricities & Telecommunications) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who is also in-charge of Islamic Affairs in the State disclosed at a conference yesterday the Symposium’s  objective is to share roles, knowledge and experience in empowering the Ummah in facing current challenges and also to come up with suggestions and actions that need tobe implemented by the ulama in empowering the ummah especially in Sarawak. He said it is also to discuss contemporary issues such as akidah, social, laws, economy, science, technology, and other issues ffecting the ummah.

There will be seven main papers to be presented during the Symposium.   Those expected to present them are Dato Setia Dr.Hajj Mazanan bin Hajj Yusof, from Brunei; Prof.Emeritus Dato Paduka Dr. Mahmoud Zuhud Abdul Majid, from Kuala Lumpur; Dato’ Dr.Afifi al-Aktiti, Fellow at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, United Kingdom; Prof. Dr. Mujiburrahman, Universitas Islam Negeri Antasari Banjarmasin, Kalimantan, Indonesia;  Prof.Dato’ Paduka Muhammad Abu Bakar, Universiti Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur; Shahibus Samahah Datuk Haji Bungsu@Aziz Haji Jaafar, Mufti of Sabah; and Sahibus Samahah Datu Haji Kipli Bin Haji Yassin, Mufti of Sarawak.

Dr Abdul Rahman said the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg will officiate at the opening the Symposium and deliver a keynote address.  He is also scheduled to launch the book ‘Ulama Dan Perkembangan Islam di Sarawak Dan Sabah’ on the second day, 24 October at Dewan Majma Tuanku Abdul Hakim Mu’adzam Shah.

Meanwhile, Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud will officiate at the adjournment and will also launch the book ‘Dato Sri Haji Abdul Kadir Bin Hassan: Pemikiran Dan Sumbangan Dalam Pembangunan Islam Di Sarawak’ on 25 Oct at the same aforesaid venue.
