KUCHING: The state government will be holding the 81st birthday celebration of the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud here from September 8 to 10.

The main event will be the thanksgiving prayer at Jamek Mosque in Petra Jaya on September 8.

The Organising Chairman and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan told a press conference this after chairing a meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

A parade and procession of 81 contingents including uniformed bodies, government departments and agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other bodies will take place at Celebrity Square, Sarawak Sports Complex in Petra Jaya on the morning of September 9.

The investiture of awards ceremony will take place at Dewan Lapau of the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex after that.

Apart from that, a State Banquet at Dewan Santapan of the new DUN will take place in the evening of September 9. There will also be    a concert entitled “Dirgahayu Concert” and a fireworks show to entertain the crowd.

“We call on members of the public to turn up in droves to the celebration in conjunction with our Head of State’s 81st birthday,” said Tengah.   

Meanwhile, on September 10, he added, a tea reception and an exhibition called “Pameran Dirgahayu” would take place.

An event called “Sarawak Kitchen”, featuring a variety of local dishes, will be held from September 8 to 10.

Also present at the press conference were Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring, Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, State Welfare Department Director, Abang Shamsuddin Abang Seruji, heads of government departments and uniformed bodies.
