KUCHING: The heat of the 29th SEA Games and the 9th ASEAN Paralympics was already felt by the people in Sarawak due to the state level Torch Run starting from June 8 to 13.

The run will pass through five destinations in the state, starting from Lawas, Limbang on June 8 over a 7km distance, said Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, at a press conference recently.

“The run will continue to Mulu, Miri (10 June), involving a distance of 5km and continue the next day (June 11) in Sekuau, Sibu for 8km,” he added.

He said the next run will cross the longest river bridge in the state, the Batang Sadong Bridge in Simunjan (Kota Samarahan) on June 12 over an 11km distance.

From Kota Samarahan the torch will be carried to the final location, Petra Jaya, here on June 13 involving a distance of 6km before being flown to Perlis on the following day (June 14).

According to Karim, the torch run is being held to promote the 29th SEA Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur in August.

“Torch relay run was held in all ASEAN countries involved in the SEA Games, including all the states in Malaysia,” he said, adding that it will give local residents the opportunity to feel the heat of the SEA Games as well as introduce the sponsors of this tournament.

However, he believed the run will be able to promote the attractions in the state (Sarawak) such as longhouses, Gunung Mulu and so on.

“Interestingly, a number of local athletes who have brought honour to the country will also be given honour to bring the torch later,” he said.

Also present at the press conference were Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Snowdan Lawan, Director of the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department, Haji Abdul Haris Ishak, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Youth and Sports, Datu Ik Pahon Joyik.

The 29th SEA Games will be held from August 19 to 31, while 9th ASEAN Paralympics will be held from Sept 17 to 23.
