KUCHING: Following the international acclaim of the hit motion picture, television series and stage show, Fame Jr! – The Musical is nothing short of a global phenomenon.

Fame Jr! features a high energy, contemporary pop score (which includes the hit title song) and a touching coming-of-age story.

Set during the last years of New York City’s celebrated High School for the Performing Arts in the early 1980s, Fame Jr! is the bittersweet, but ultimately inspiring, story of a diverse group of students who commit to four years of gruelling artistic and academic work. With candour, humour and insight, the show explores the issues that confront many young people today.

There will be three performances  on Friday, September 29, Saturday, September 30, and Sunday, October 1  starting at 7.30pm, with participants ranging from ten to seventeen years of age.

For some, this is their first ever performance under the dazzling stage lights; for others, it will be their last production before leaving school to begin their November exams.

Among the performers are Jansen Lau, a regular school production performer, playing the seasoned professional child actor, Nick Piazza, whose sole purpose is to become a serious actor “not some TV hack”.

Jansen himself, has recently auditioned and been successful in gaining a place at the coveted American Academy of Dramatic Art, a fact that the school and Drama Department are very proud of.

Also in the cast is Sharifa AfraArijah, another frequent performer, who is playing the irrefutable Miss Sherman. The characters of Miss Sherman (the English teacher) and Ms Bell (the Dance teacher, played by Keesha Lau) argue over the achievements of an excellent dancer, Tyrone Jackson (the mirror of the infamous “Leroy” from the original TV drama); a harmonic battle ensues to keep him in school.

A high point of the show sees the drama queen, Carmen Diaz, played by Avril Lim, try to prove her drama teacher (Daniel Wee) wrong and performs probably the most famous song from the show, There She Goes – Fame!, along with a majority of the cast in an all singing, all dancing show number.

Participants have been led by the new Head of Creative and Performing Arts, Angela Williams, who only joined the school in May this year, taking on the challenge of directing, choreographing and producing a show before the end of the academic year.

This is not the first time that the drama and dance teacher has produced this show. “I first put Fame Jr! on as part of the Cultural Olympiad in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics, performed in a transformed sailing hanger,” says Angela, a teacher of 19 years from the UK.

“I loved this musical then, I still love it now. It’s fun and fast paced, and will give its audience a good level of spectacle with a fantastic cast to support”.

Tickets for the musical are available from the school administration office, or from Pei Sheng on 016-2232108. For general admission, tickets are RM50, and RM100 for front row seats on each night.
