Two big flood mitigation projects waiting to start

KUCHING: The two major flood mitigation projects the state, namely the one in Kuching is still in the framework drawing phase while its Sibu counterpart is awaiting for the date of project launching, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He added the Sibu project that costs about RM100 million is still waiting for the launching date from the Chief Minister’s Office as all the preparations for lauching are done and the construction company has been identified.

“For the project in Kuching, we are also still waiting for the progress as there are two or three changes involved. This is because there are some areas for the project have beebn taken by the state government for the state project at Padang Merdeka here, we can see the construction works for the state project are ongoing,” he said.

He also said that the ministry was now making changes in areas by themselves thereby delaying a little bit of time for the project launching in Kuching.

“But it will not be later than October this year, as we will meet the Chief Minister for the launching date,” he added when met by reporters after the handing over Works Indent and SPNB Subsidies Certificate for RMR1M Project Parliament P193 Santubong at Level 2, Pusat Khidmat Parliment Santubong, Jalan Kulas here yesterday.

He said the flood mitigation project in Sibu will benefit about 40,000 people while in Kuching it will benefit about 94,000 people.

“These two projects are the big projects that we are waiting for to be launched as this will help to handle the flood issues,” he said.
