KUCHING: Two theft suspects, comprising a local and an Indonesian national, were yesterday charged at the Kuching Sessions Court here for stealing 1750 grams of agarwood (kayu gaharu) without permit for the purpose of smuggling it into Indonesia.

The case is being investigated under section 30 (2) of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998 (Chap.26).

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Evy Liana Binti Atang assisted by Legal Officer Ma Xiang Rui from the Sarawak State Attorney General’s Office.

The offence was committed by both accused by taking the agarwood at Tubih, Serian on August 24, at around 3am before taking it to the Indonesia border using Kampung Mongkos route.

It is believed that the agarwood will be sold to buyers in Indonesia for an amount of RM3,000.

A team of General Operation Force (GOF)of the 11th Battalion then acted by arresting the two suspects at around 5.30am on the same day before being handing them over to Sarawak Forest Department for further action.

Meanwhile Sarawak Forest Director Hamden Mohammad expressed his gratitude to the police in particular the GOF in this arrest.

Drastic action will be taken against individuals found in violation of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998, Forest Ordinance 2015 and the National Park and Nature Reserves Ordinance 1998, he warned. This is to safeguard the natural beauty of Sarawak.
