UKM offers Corruption as a subject beginning 2018

KUCHING: In collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agenc y (MACC) , Univer s i t i Kebangsaan Malaysia will be offering a new subject called Corruption, beginning next year. Datuk Abdul Samat Bin Kasah, MACC Director for Community Education (Penmas), said when the idea was tabled to the Ministry of Higher Education, it was accepted.

“He n c e , MACC a n d t h e University are now working on it, and God Willing, the subject will be offered in 2018,” He disclosed this to reporters after officiating the closing of the ‘Wira Anti- Dadah (WAR)’ programme for Kuching Division schools, held at SMK St. Thomas here, yesterday. According to Abdul Samat, it is a pilot project and if found to be successful, will be extended to other universities.

Meanwhile, MACC is also coming up with a guide book on corruption which is now in its final stage of completion. “It will be handed over to the Education Ministry and if they want to use the book, it will be distributed among teachers.

“God willing, the guide book will be launched within the next one or two months,” said Abdul Samat. He said the subject on corruption had already been taught in Year 5 and 6, and also in Form 1 and 2. On the WAR programme and the numbers of schools involved, he said it had been going on for the past two years.

“The war on corruption is a collective effort and to date, 16 Ministries under the Federal Government, four ministries at state level and 93 state agencies have signed the Corruption Free Pledge. “In Sarawak, 32 agencies had signed the Pledge, including the State Education Department,” said Abdul Samat. Ea r l i e r, Kuching Di s t r i c t Education Officer Chen Fei Meng in his speech thanked MACC for bringing the WAR programme to Kuching, which is the first for Sarawak.

The WAR p ro g r amme i n Kuching involved four schools – SMK St Thomas, SK Encik Buyong, SK Green Road and Chung Hua Primary No. 4. There were some 300 participants.
