KUCHING: The upgrading works of 1.3 terabyte per second to four terabyte Internet speed undertaken at the end of this will not involve a lot of investment.

State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morsidi Abdul Ghani said that the upgrading works will not involve any additional installation underwater fibre optics cable in the state.

“This is due to the fact that the current cable is able to have a maximum speed of 12 terabyte per second. Hence, to upgrade it to four terabyte would not need much investment,” said Morshidi.

He pointed this out during a press conference after gracing the Chief Minister Industry Excellence Awards (CMIEA) 2017

held at Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), Jalan Bako, yesterday.

He said that the implementing department, Telekom Malaysia (TM) will start the upgrading works by the end of this month and will altogether increase the internet speed to be used by businesses, industries and domestic.

“However, not all houses can utilise the upgraded speed as the high speed may cause cables and electronic appliances to burn out,” he said.

Morshidi then added that the current domestic internet speed is at 30 to 50 megabyte per second (mbps). When upgrading has completed, houses may utilise 100 to 200 mbps.

“For rural areas, we will need to install communication towers first before any upgrading works can be undertaken. The current speed is around 5 mbps only.

“We will need to construct around 5,000 communication towers or construct them near to each other before upgrading works can take place,” said Morshidi.
