MIRI: The RM900,000 upgrading works on the  Saberkas Night Market,  one of Miri  City’s popular destinations, is expected to be  completed by month-end.

Miri City Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang said rumours of delay  in the upgrading works which began in January,  with completion scheduled by end of this month were completely untrue and unfounded.

“There is no delay in the (upgrading) works, the completion date is still on schedule, which is March 23,” he told  Bernama  here yesterday.

Yii said  overall, the progress  works stood at 55  per cent, with the fabrication of roof truss done at the workshop in progress at 75 per cent.

“Installation of steel structure will start next week,” he said, adding that the  Miri  City Council (MCC) was continously monitoring the progress of the works.

Previously, Yii was quoted as saying that once the project was completed, the night market where 216 traders operated would have rain harvesting system, washing areas and proper water discharge system to ensure its cleanliness and steel roofs.

Saberkas  Night Market Traders Association of Miri  chairman, Abdul Rahman Jawawi  is hopeful traders can move into the site by next month as they are currently  operating  at a  temporary site where their daily business is affected.

“Many of the traders complained  their sales were down to 70 per cent because not many customers were aware of the temporary site which could not accomodate  all the 216 traders,” he said, adding that only 160 traders operated  at the temporary site.

The night market operates from 2pm to 11pm  from Wednesday to Saturday, with many local and foreign tourists, especially from Brunei, flocking to the night market  every weekend. – Bernama

The popularity of the Saberkas  Night Market was evident when it was listed in the Sarawak Tourism Board official website as one of the must-visit destinations in Miri  City.
