VPS plays vital role in neighbourhood security

KUCHING: The Voluntary Patrol Scheme (VPS) plays a vital role in maintaining the peace and security of neighbourhood communities.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said this while attending the Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT) Appreciation Night at Penview Convention Centre (PCC), Demak here on Monday night.

“VPS activities in Neighbourhood Watch Committees (KRT) have increased understanding among the multiracial communities besides keeping the peace and safety of the neighbourhood.

“This holistic approach will foster the spirit of volunteerism among the VPS members,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak National Unity and Integration Department director, Dirwana Azool said up to date, there are 496 registered VPS throughout the state.

“There are 977 registered KRTs throughout the state and our target for this year is to achieve 1,000 KRTs. Last year, we carried out 10,351 activities and we will do more for this year,” said Dirwana.

There were presentation of Excellence Awards at the dinner which was attended by KRT members from Kuching, Samarahan and Serian.

Accompanying the Chief Minister were Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Federal Minister of Public Works, Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development, Rosey Yunus, Assistant Minister of Community Wellbeing, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Tupong Assemblyman, Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman, Simunjan Assemblyman, Awla Dris and Batu Kitang Assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang.
