KUCHING: The State-Level Warriors’ Day was celebrated in full tradition at the Heroes’ Grave at Jalan Budaya Kuching here yesterday morning.Besides a poetry recital, The Last Post was played in honour o those who had sacrificed their lives for the country during their services.
The solemn ceremony was graced by the Commander of the Eastern Field Command, Lieutenant General Datuk Stephen Mundaw and former Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang. Both were among the dignitaries who laid wreaths at the Heroes’ Grave
The celebration was held simultaneously throughout the nation yesterday to honour warriors, especially vetereans, who had fought for the peace and independence of Malaysia.
“Their contributions towards the nation were recorded in history and must be remembered by the younger generations so that they can appreciate the meaning of independence and peace,” said Mundaw.
Mundaw also said that as part of the initiative to remember the warriors, the “Heroes Day Donation Campaign”
had been launched.
“This initiative provides an opportunity to the young generation, especially schoolchildren as well as students of higher learning institutes to understand the meaning of the Warriors’ Day celebration,” he added.
The state-level Warriors’ Day celebration was held in four venues in Sarawak, namely, at the Heroes’ Grave at Taman Budaya Kuching (where which the late Temenggong Datuk Kanang Anak Langkau, late Micheal Padil -Op Daulat in Sabah, and 21 skeletons of Iban trackers brought from Peninsular and Singapore were buried), in Bau (where Bujang Berani Veteran Nyopis Anak Noyeat was buried), in Kampung Buntal (where beteran TRP Rasli Bin Buang was buried), and in Kapit where the 21 veterans were buried in the Anglican Cemetery.
