Woman arrested for suspected abuse of maid

MIRI: An Indonesian woman was arrested after she was suspected of abusing her 16-year-old maid which resulted in the maid having bruises on her head, face and body. The 37-year-old suspect was arrested in a restaurant at Jalan North Yu Seng here at about 11.30pm on Sunday.

The abuse case was revealed after the victim managed to flee from her employer’s rented house before getting help from the police.

Miri Deputy Pol ice Chief, Superintendent Stanley Jonathan Ringgit confirmed the case and said that initial investigation found out that the maid started working with the suspect three months ago. He added that the victim, an Indonesian was brought in to the state by an unknown man in September. “The victim claimed that she was paid only RM50 a month but is kept by her employer.

“The victim also claimed that she was fed only once a day and not allowed to leave the house except with the suspect when necessary,” he said.

Stanley added that the victim has bruises all over her body and swelling on her head which are believed to be the result of being hit, pinched, bitten and splashed with hot water by the employer. He said the victim has been taken to Miri Hospital for further examination and treatment.

According to Stanley besides arresting the suspect, police also seized a plastic scoop and a belt believed to be used by the suspect in the case.

“Further investigation will be made to determine the actual cause of the incident and the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code,” for voluntary causing hurt,” he said.
