Workers’ quarters razed in morning fire

KUCHING: Three blocks of workers’ quarters at a construction site along Jalan Graji, Ulu Julau/Ulu Pakan, Sarikei, were destroyed in a fire around 10.00am last Sunday.

According to State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), eight personnel, led by Senior Fire Officer II Samsawi Mohammad, from Bintangor fire station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 10.09am.

They were also assisted by a team eight of personnel, led by Senior Fire Officer II Abang Johari Abang Senawie, from Sarikei fire station.

Upon arrival at the scene, about 55 kilometres from Bintagor fire station, at 11.32am, the firefighters discovered that the fire had already razed all three blocks.

The fire was brought under control by noon and the operation ended about an hour later.

Besides the quarters, a garage meant for repairing lorries and a lorry were also damaged.

An Indonesian worker, aged 21, was reported to have suffered second degree burns on his face, neck and body in the incident and was sent by fellow workers to a clinic at Nanga Wak for treatment.

It was believed that the incident happened after one of the workers threw a lit cigarette butt near a flammable liquid storeroom.
