KUCHING: This year ’s World Mental Health Day (WMHD) will be celebrated on 28 October, with the theme ‘Mental Health in the Workplace’. The event to be held at the Theatre Hall of International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS) Jalan Stampin Timur will mark the 25th anniversary of WMHD set by the World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH) on 10 October, 1992.

Speaking at a press conference on the celebration, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian said that the theme of the celebration will really teach people on how to diagnose and handle mental health in the worklpace.

“If you do not know about mental health problem in the workplace, you will not know how to identify it as an issue and how you want to get help to overcome it,” he said. He added that workers may get bullied, stressed and depressed in their workplace which will impact their mental health. “Even though there may not be a lot of mental health cases among us because people are unaware of it and we do hope it is not a lot, but of course, we still want to help people to handle it.

“We do not want people to get depressed because in an extreme case it can lead people to commit suicide and we are really against it,” he said in his office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here, yesterday. Dr Sim hoped that many people will come to the celebration to learn more on how to cope with mental health in the workplace.

Meanwhi le, ac cording t o Pres ident of Mental Heal t h Association of Sarawak Kuching Branch, Dr Lau Kim Kah, the event aimed to raise awareness on mental health, to be able to pick up the early signs and symptoms and what roles bosses can play in looking after their workers’ mental health. “We often see that there are mental health problems at workplace as such depression may impact productivity as well as the organisation and economy.

“When you are under stress at work, you should get help and not necessarily from a psychiatrist but you can talk to your pastor, leader, older people or to your colleagues and friends, too,” he said.

Prior to the opening ceremony, there will be a keynote address entitled “Mental Health in the Workplace” by a Psychogeriatrician who is also Director of Hospital Sentosa, Dr Haji Ismail Drahman. There will also be a video screening of Project S, a mental health dance video produced by Stories in Motion and Butterflies of Life.

The opening ceremony will befollowed by the launching of Alan Pui‘s book -My Story. It is about a recovery journey of Mr. Alan Pui from Bipolar Disorder.

Talks on several topics related to mental health in the workplace will commence at 11 am. The first talk will be delivered by Dr Lau Kim Kah on Common Mental Heal th Issues in the Workplace.

The Second talk will be on Mental Health Resiliency by Ms. Kelly Lee, a registered counsellor. Besides, there are also mental health screening, mental health exhibition and quiz which will be held at the corridor of the Lecture Theatre until 4pm.
