KUCHING: Warnings of strong winds and heavy rain are being released for most parts of Sarawak especially low lying areas in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Marudi, Limbang, Miri including Subis.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department’s statement said the situation was due to the wind patterns and the tropical depression over the waters of the Philippines which is expected to occur on January 21 and 22.

“This situation can result in strong winds and heavy rains throughout Sarawak,” the statement said on Saturday.

Strong winds at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph can cause waves to reach 3.5 metres and is deemed very dangerous for small boats carrying out fishing activities.

Members of the public are also advised to be aware of possible floods especially for low-lying areas in the state.
