YES contest by YEC for all Sarawakians

SIBU: Young Entrepreneur Committee (YEC) under Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) is organising Young Entrepreneur Sarawak (YES) competition that is open to all Sarawakians regardless of race and religion.

According to the president of YEC, Dr. Renco Yong, they are targeting 200 to 300 participants with 100 new or enhanced business idea or model to join the competition. “Potential young entrepreneurs who come out with their business idea will be provided with training skills like business planning, equity allocation, entrepreneurship, presentation, financial planning and strategy, social media and Internet marketing,” he said.

Yong said this when officiating at the Facebook marketing workshop held at SCCCI premises in Sibu recently.   Managing Director of Symmetry Marketing Academy, Penang, William Cheong and who has become an Internet entrepreneur since 2014 was the speaker at the workshop.

YEC established in January this year is aimed to unite and develop young entrepreneurs in Sibu Central Region, to provide business and networking, enhance their skill and knowledge in order for them to be competitive.

Yong, who is also the secretary of Sibu Shipyards Association, said the competition would be go for three rounds, which include selection from 100 business ideas, down to 20 and with final pitching to 10 qualifers. The 10 qualifiers would be on stage to present their workable and profitable ideas and models to be the winners, he said. Throughout the competition, he pointed out training would be provided, with experience trainers from all different areas of expertise with course fees all-inclusive with meal, venue and training materials.

A full colour magazine of the new business idea would be presented and printed, he said. The competition offers a budget of RM 200,000 in total whereby the first prize would be RM 30,000, with another two prizes for creativity and best team work which is RM 8,000 each, Yong pointed out.

“We often find very talented people among our friends and relatives; with their great ideas of business, we normally encourage them to go to Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu or Singapore for a better opportunity. “As Sarawakians, we have to change our mindset today and with our gifted talent, we shall stay and contribute to Sarawak.

“Previously you may say you do not have capital, network, platform, connection or assistance to kick start your own business. “Now the YES competition is the best channel for you to not only compete and know more than 100 new business ideas, but it will also allow you to meet with many experts who are successful businessmen and young entrepreneurs.
