MIRI: Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) project is an international method used to humanely control and stabilise the population of stray dogs and cats.

Zero Strays Miri (ZSM), a none-profit animal welfare organisation here, established in the year 2013,has adopted this human stray population control method.

President of the ZSM, Sterwina Kho  said TNR is the only humane solution to prevent the increase in number of strays from uncontrolled breeding. When they are neutered, they will not mate and reproduce more offspring in the area, hence stabilising the population.

She added, Trap, Neuter and Release is gaining its acceptance in Miri city and more locals are starting to understand the importance of neutering.

“The stray dogs and stray cats are humanely trapped, taken to a veterinarian clinic for a vet check, vaccinated and neutered.

“After the recovery, these animals are released back to their places of origin with their initial feeders caring for them,” she said.

The TNR project provides a life-saving and an effective solution for these independent and beautiful creatures.

There are many reasons to embrace TNR as it helps stabilise the population of strays, remove unwanted aggression during mating season and instantly ends the problem of uncontrolled breeding.

TNR improves and protects the lives of strays as well as it answers the social issue of increase in number of strays in one area.

It is also important for pet owners to be responsible with their own pets to avoid uncontrolled breeding of unwanted puppies and kittens.

On average, ZSM receives at least four reports in a month of abandoned puppies or kittens in boxes on the streets.

“Stray dogs and cats exist because irresponsible owners abandon their unwanted pets on the streets. We suggest owners to neuter their pets to avoid uncontrolled breeding as dumping is not a humane solution, “she said.
