KUCHING: Whoever becomes prime minister next must focus on the country’s wellbeing, says a political analyst.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Dick Lembang Dugun expressed hope that the next prime minister would get the backing from all MPs and that they would all put politicking aside.

“(Tan Sri) Muhyiddin (Yassin) lost his majority once 15 Umno MPs withdrew their support. The question now is who will become the prime minister and form the government,” he said on Monday (Aug 16).

He noted that the political turmoil would not impact the nation much in terms of programmes already in place such as the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

“The heads of all public service departments should ensure that all programmes run as usual.

“In terms of politics, the nation wishes to see the period of political uncertainty come to an end as it will give impact the country’s economy and image if prolonged.

“All politicians must put the people first rather than the party or their own interests. The people are watching.”

On whether the federal political development will affect Sarawak, he said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government would support whoever can protect the interests of Sarawakians.

“The rights and voices of Sarawakians are their (GPS) top priority. I think they will support the new prime minister to ensure there is no political turmoil ahead of the 15th General Election.”
