KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching recently came to the aid of a 68-year-old grandmother who is the only bread-winner in the family.

Hope Place, in a statement today, disclosed that Jong Khim Nyuk lives in a low-cost house at Stutong Baru with her disabled son, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren.

“Aunty Jong works as a part-time cleaner and she earns about RM600 per month from customers requesting for her services. Her son has learning disability and stays at home.

“Her daughter-in-law takes care of her son as well as the four grandchildren aged between 12 and 16 years old, so she has her hands full and unable to find any income,” Hope Place said.

Hope Place added that Jong’s husband passed away 20 years ago.

The charitable non-governmental organisation (NGO) added the family also face problems in adapting to the home-based online learning and teaching (PdPR).

“Aunty Jong is very proud of her grandchildren because they try their best to study hard. However, the family needs extra money to pay for sufficient internet data for the children’s online learning.

“However, she is grateful that the Social Welfare Department is giving a monthly financial aid of RM250 to her disabled son.”

Hope Place is helping the family with supplies of basic food aid once every three months.
