KUCHING: Sarawak Society for Tolerance and Awareness (Softaa) has drawn up a broad spectrum of plans to continue its work to promote tolerance and awareness in society this year.

For starters it plans on continuing its Back to School programme which involved the distribution of school bags and stationery to students of SMK Tebakang last year.

“Softaa has also donated to needy Sarawakian heart patients admitted to Institut Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur (IJN) and heart patients admitted for heart surgery at Serdang hospital,” it said in a statement.

Additionally it is working with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) to create awareness among the public on natural disasters such as floods and fires.

“We are also liaising with few higher institutions of learning in Sarawak such as Unimas on the possibility of creating awareness programmes on relevant fields involving university students.

“Other aspects include creating social awareness on drugs and drug abuse,” it added.

Softaa is also embarking on downstream activities to create awareness and greater tolerance in every level of the community including lawmakers and relevant institutions to promote greater justice and harmony.

Towards this end it supported Universiti Malaya’s initiative to explore studies on the Native Customary Rights (NCR) and Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“The time is rife for Sarawakian students and Sarawakians in general to be enriched with the knowledge on NCR and MA63 which is in tandem with our core mission and objective to create awareness on the deeper meaning and understanding on both issues,” it said.
