SIBU: The night market or ‘pasar malam’ here will be rejuvenated to pull in the crowd.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting revealed this at the council meeting yesterday.

He said the council had to give the night market a new lease of life so that it would not die a natural death.

He pointed out that public response to the market located at Cross Road had dwindled over the years. Shops around it had also closed at night.

Market and Petty Traders Committee chairman Albert Tiang added his committee would come out with a new layout for the market to attract customers.

Ting later told a press conference that his top priority after taking over the helm of the council two weeks ago from his predecessor Datuk Tiong Thai King was to clean up the town.

“Cleanliness of the town is my goal and together with the councillors, we will clean the town as fast as possible,” he said.

“The cleanliness project will kick off at the central business district (CBD) area before proceeding to protocol roads such as Jalan Tun Abang Hj Openg.

“After that, we will move to the residential areas and clear the blocked drains. I have talked to our contractors and hope they will support us.”

Touching on the CBD area, Ting said he wanted the shop owners to clean up their five-foot ways to project a better image of the town.

“Trees growing on commercial buildings in the CBD area will also have to go,” he added.
