Nine arrested in raid on suspected online gambling centre

Police raided a semi-detached house in Jalan Rock, Kuching that was believed to be used to operate an online gambling call centre on Monday.

KUCHING: Police raided an online gambling call centre and arrested nine foreigners on Monday (May 23).

Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) — acting on information — swooped on a semi-detached house in Jalan Rock here around 7pm.

“Nine Indonesians, comprising five men and four women aged between 13 and 25, and believed to be operating the centre, were arrested.

“Investigations found that the premises was used as an operation and management centre for online gambling and believed to be operating since last December.

“Based on the transaction records, they have been reaping about RM2,000 per day and approximately RM360,000 for the past six months.”

Also seized were a desktop, three laptops, a router, a modem and other equipment used for the illegal activity.

The case is being investigated under Section 4 (1) (g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 and a jail term of up to three years. They will also be fined up to RM50,000 for each online gambling machine seized.

The suspects will also be investigated under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

On another note, ACP Ahsmon revealed that two Indonesian men and a local woman were arrested in three separate raids in the city for engaging in online gambling activities.

Both men, aged 25, and the 18-year-old woman are currently detained for further investigation under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
