KUCHING: A total of nine churches and temples in Bintangor received financial assistance from the state government through the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor).

Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the total allocation of RM820,000, would be used to upgrade the various houses of worship.

“I would like to thank the Sarawak government under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving the allocations for Bintangor.

“I would also like to thank Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is the Minister-in-charge of Unifor for channelling funds to upgrade churches and temples in Bintangor,” he said.

Among the recipients for the grant were the Bintangor Buddhist Association, Chin Nguong Tong Methodist Church, Preaching Centre Methodist Church and Tien Nguon Methodist Church.

Also receiving the assistance were Tee Ong Methodist Church, Sg Labas Preaching Methodist Church, Ming Kwong Methodist Church, Lai Ang Methodist Church and Zhen Guang Methodist Church.

Ding said the assistance given to non-Muslim religious houses was unique to Sarawak as it is the only state that uses its funds to upgrade or build houses of worships.

He called on the community, especially in Bintangor to continue to provide support to the state government.

“This is so that the allocation from Unifor can continue to be channelled every year to houses of worship,” he said.
