NEW DELHI: At least nine people, including six women, were killed and 10 injured in an explosion at a fireworks factory in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

The blast happened near Sivakasi in the Virudhunagar district, an area known as a hub for making fireworks, in Tamil Nadu state, according to local media reports.

The region is located about 550 km from the state capital Chennai.

Seven rooms filled with firecrackers were gutted in the fire, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin extended condolences to the families of the deceased and promised that relief aid would be provided to them. – BERNAMA
