Nine new cases push total number to 881

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded nine new positive Covid-19 cases today, bringing the total number in the state to 881.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement said of these cases, six were reported in Kuching, two in Miri and one in Samarahan.

Five (of six) of the new cases in Kuching are from the Green Hill Cluster. Two are employees in one of the premises visited by a positive case from the cluster. They showed fever symptoms.

Two others had social contacts with cases from Green Hill while one had close contact with Case 855 which was reported on Oct 29. The case did not show signs and symptoms of the disease.

All of the five cases were screened between Oct 29 and 30, and all the results were reported positive on Oct 30.

SDMC said another new case in Kuching was found through contact tracing. He is a local man who had close contact with Case 847 detected on Oct 29. The case did not have signs and symptoms of the disease.

The case was screened on Oct 29 and his result came back positive on Oct 30. Contact tracings were carried out after that.

In Miri, one case was recorded after being traced from the Greenhill Cluster. The local businessman was a social contact of Case 829 who was detected on Oct 28. He has been in Kuching since the middle of September and returned to Miri on Oct 26.

He was screened on Oct 27 at a private health in Miri. The test results on Oct 28 were positive. The man was coughing and was admitted to Miri Hospital on the same day. This case was considered as from outside the district (import C).

Another new case detected in Miri is a local man who was screened on Oct 30. He was found positive for Covid-19 on the same day.

SDMC said until the actual causes of the infections are identified, the cases are categorised as local and need further investigation.

A new case in Samarahan is a local man who had travelled to Melaka. He arrived at Kuching International Airport (KIA) on Oct 28 and was swabbed and then told to undergo mandatory 14-day quarantine in a separate room at his workplace in Kota Samarahan.

On Oct 30 he was found to be Covid-19 positive although he did not show signs and symptoms of the disease. He was admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and was consequentially categorised as infection case from Covid-19 risk area (import B).

SDMC also said there is no new recovery and discharged cases from any hospital today. This brings the total of recovered and discharged cases to 748 or 84.9 percent.

The total number of cases still being treated at isolation wards is 114, of which 97 are in SGH, 14 in Miri Hospital, two in Sibu Hospital and one in Bintulu Hospital. There is no case treated at intensive care units (ICUs).

Fourteen persons are under investigation (PUI) while one is still awaiting laboratory result.

Sixty-five persons under surveillance (PUS) checked into hotels to undergo quarantine, bringing the total number of PUS in 24 hotels to 2,327 while 28,780 had completed their quarantine.
