KUCHING: There are no excuses for Bidayuh parents not to send their children to school, said Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin.

He said Bidayuh children should go for the highest level of education available while parents should not neglect their responsibility to send their children to school.

“Education is the key to our success in life, and as such, I advise our children not to use poverty as an excuse not to go to school.

“Parents musn’t use the same excuse not to send their children to school,” he said at a Parents Day organised by Kampung Semadang Women’s Bureau yesterday.

He called on all Bidayuh leaders, including village heads and community leaders, to join hands in helping to ensure children from poor families receive formal education.

Willie urged parents in the Puncak Borneo constituency who have children studying in universities to come to his service centre to apply for a one-off cash assistance of RM500 for degree students and RM300 for those studying for their diplomas.

For women wanting to do Pap tests (also called a Pap smear), he advised them to do so free of charge at Nur Sejahtera Clinic.

He also advised Puncak Borneo residents to come to his service centre to apply for their electricity bill rebates, saying those who earned less than RM660 per month could apply for a RM40 rebate.

He revealed that 1,700 residents were currently enjoying this rebate.

At the function, Willie approved a RM10,000 grant to Kampung Semadang Women’s Bureau for its activities.
