KUCHING: The declaration of assets should be a simple task and not something to fret over, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak director Razim Mohd Noor to reporters at MACC Sarawak’s Gawai-Raya celebration here yesterday.

“Just declare. The only reason declaring assets would be worrisome is if the assets are obtained through illicit means,” he said in alluding to the Dewan Rakyat’s approval of a motion to make it compulsory for all members of parliament (MPs) to declare their assets.

Razim said government officials should also declare their assets or face difficulties when they get promoted.

“Now, it is only a matter of time until Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) MPs declare their assets as the motion has been approved by Parliament,” Razim stated.

When asked about high-profile corruption cases in Sarawak, he clarified that reports received were entered into MACC Headquarters’ system in order for the process of investigation to be carried out.

“We are just the liaison, what happens depend on MACC Headquarters,” he said.

Razim revealed that there was at least one complaint for a ‘big fish’ case in Sarawak. However, he added that he felt some of them had been investigated a long time ago.

“We have submitted the report to Headquarters, but have not received any further instruction yet,” he said, adding that this year alone there were many complaints received.

Razim added that lodging a complaint was simple as it could be done via MACC’s website.

Razim stressed that regardless of the amount of money involved, investigations could be carried out.

“We have established the National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption (GIACC), and the Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg) has given a good response towards the declaration of assets,” he told reporters.

“These declarations are made to GIACC while MACC only holds records,” Razim added.
