KUCHING: Selangau MP Baru Bian hopes that Phase 1 of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) project connecting Lawas to Long Luping, also known as Long Lopeng, would start as soon as possible.

While welcoming the recent announcement by former Senior Minister of Works Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on Aug 15 on the said project, he said the long-delayed project should start immediately.

“It is hoped that there will be no more delays. The project has been delayed for more than a year after the allocation was approved by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in 2019,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 23).

Baru, who is also the former Works Minister during the PH regime, has requested that the local contractors be given the opportunity to be involved in the project and provide employment opportunities for the local residents.

“I also hope that there will be no more deductions on the total distance of this road. The PH government has approved a distance of 95km from Lawas to Pa’ Berunut at a cost of RM1.2 billion.

“However, the then new federal government had made changes by only approving a distance of 77km from KM12 to Kampung Long Luping with an allocation of RM1 billion,” he said.

He said the construction of Phase 2 of the SSLR project and the Trans Borneo Highway, which were previously planned and approved by the PH government, should also proceed as soon as possible.

“This road network is very important in the development of the economy of Sarawak and also neighbouring countries, namely Brunei and Indonesia,” Baru said.
