KUCHING: The government will not impose registration for bicycles, neither is there a need for cycling licences.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Hasbi Habibollah said this in allaying public confusion particularly among cycling enthusiasts that the government would impose bicycle registration and number plates.

“There is no such thing as registering a licence for cyclists in Malaysia, likewise using the registration plate number for bicycles.

“Across Malaysia, we can see that there are many bicycle enthusiasts.

“Just to correct the misconception among the public, there will be no imposition of plate numbers for bicycle,” he said when met by the media after attending a function at Penview Convention Centre (PCC) in Demak here today.

Hasbi stressed that the ministry of Transport (MOT) never had any discussion to have licences for bicycles or to equip them with number plates.

“Thus, I want to reiterate that there was no plan to license bicycles or issue them with number plates.

“For Sarawakians, we know that we have a lot of bicycle enthusiasts but do not worry, there will be no licensing for the bicycles,” he said, adding that he had voiced the same issue when tabling the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2020 in the Dewan Negara last Tuesday.

On cyclists who are using the highway, he mentioned that they must obey the laws that had been implemented and enforced by the government, such as cycling on the designated places and following the traffic rules.

“This is for the cyclists’ own safety and that is our utmost priority,” he added.
