KUCHING: Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) president Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik has urged the people to follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) for Gawai Dayak celebration set by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

“SDMC has given a directive for Gawai to be celebrated for only one day, meaning only on June 1. It shall be celebrated with no visitors and confine to only family members.

“This means the practice of ngabang is not permitted during the festival as Covid-19 pandemic is still on the prowl and we do not want to have a new cluster called Gawai cluster,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

He further advised the people to continue practising social distancing, wearing face masks when in public places and washing hands frequently.

“When the fight against Covid-19 outbreak ends, next year’s Gawai could be grander. So for this year, practise restraint and take care of our health,” he said.
