KOTA SAMARAHAN: No case was recorded in Sarawak involving price control and price tag during spot checks conducted by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) from May 20 until Thursday (May 28).

Its minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said since the enforcement of the Festive Seasons Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) for Hari Raya Aidilfitri on May 20 (effective until June 3), KPDNHEP has conducted a total of 17,496 checks nationwide as of Thursday.

“During that period, KPDNHEP has recorded a total of 48 cases. Of the cases, 17 were of price increase of controlled items while 31 others were offences related to non-display of price tags.

“Goods worth RM10, 448.30 were confiscated and RM118, 000 in compounds collected.

“However, Sarawak does not record any contributing case to the total,” he told reporters after his walkabout at Bandar Riyal Market near here, today.

The SHMPP for Hari Gawai Dayak and Pesta Kaamatan celebrations began on May 28 and will be effective until June 3.

On his visit to the Bandar Riyal Market, Nanta expressed his satisfaction with the rate of compliance of the standard operating procedure (SOP) for conditional movement control order (CMCO) by the traders.

“The surroundings are very clean, and in line with the SOP set by the government, checking of the body temperature of visitors at the entrance and the use of hand sanitisers are satisfactorily observed.

“Price control is also in compliance with the SHMPP. In fact, some hawkers are selling chicken below the standard price of RM8.50/kg. Some of them even sell chicken at RM7.80/kg, which is the price requested by their patrons.

“Apparently, sellers are not out to profiteer but that they also give a lot of leeway to their customers,” he added.

Also present was Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos.
