KOTA PADAWAN: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is taking a bold step to prevent food stall operators under its jurisdiction to use styrofoam containers to pack food and drinks in their premises. MPP’s deputy chairman Dato Ahmad Ibrahim stressed that this was in line with the global trend as well as the Council’s aspiration to preserve the environment to become friendly and healthy for the future generations.

“The campaign was initiated way back in January 2018 when it was launched by Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Local Government and Housing at E-Mart Batu Kawa with regards to ‘No Styrofoam Containers’ especially in MPP.

“Padawan Municipal Council has advised all foodstall operators to follow the Council’s directive and set a condition and I think many of them have fulfilled this condition although there may be some who still need to be reminded to refrain from using styrofoam and it is an ongoing process,” said Ahmad at a press conference after MPP full council meeting here yesterday. He pointed out that ‘No Styrofoam Containers’ for packing food was a prime condition to the renewal of foodstall operators’ licences.

“One of our conditions is that if they do not follow our request or requirement that ‘No Styrofoam’ should be used for food or drinks, we may be obligated not to renew their licences,” he said. As the stalls would no longer use styrofoam containers, customers have been advised to bring their own containers should they wish to pack their food home.

Ahmad added that MPP had also started to introduce ‘No Plastic Bag Day’ on every Saturday in all supermarkets, hypermarkets, shopping malls and departmental stores and hoped that this would be extended to every other day of the week.

“As plastics have been found to be one of the wastes that don’t disintegrate well and known to be the cause of cancer, polluting the rivers and seas, it is part of our environmental programme and we are enforcing and encouraging people to do this,” he said.
