KUCHING: There is no reason for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to block the amendment of Article 1(2), said Sarawak Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Chong Chieng Jen.

Chong added that by their objection, GPS MPs should rethink their position and accept the Bill gracefully as a manifestation that brings good things from the PH government.

“We regret the GPS has come out very strongly against the amendment and there is no reason to reject the Bill as Sarawak has nothing to lose but everything to gain with a change in constitutional status to regain its rightful position, he told reporters at a press conference at DAP headquarters here today.

“The negotiation still can continue if it is not happy with the amendment. It still can propose but for it to object this amendment, Sarawak will remain as one of the 13 states in Malaysia until such time when it can come to an agreement,” he added.

“The important thing is whether GPS will put its interest on Sarawak as its priority because it was Umno which brought us to this state and it is leading the charge to oppose because it is trying to put right certain injustices that it has done.

“Hence, we urge GPS MPs to support this view because it is only the start. Try to put the whole perspective and framework in the right perspective. Now it is something concrete that has been offered to Sarawak. Take it while you can still talk and discuss and walking out is definitely not a choice,” he said.

Also present were Sarawak PKR vice chairman Ali Biju, Sarawak Amanah chairman Mohamad Fidzuan Zaidi, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong and other state PH leaders.
